having Elijah MIA in the beginning of The Vampire Diaries season 4 and
then showing up later as a way to make it work for Gillies to do other

On an interview at TV Fanatic when asked if he'll be back in season 4 Gilles teased "the door is always open" adding "he loves producer Julie Plec and that set just has a special energy."
